The joy of acting like a kid again

I often hear teens and adults say they miss being a kid. They miss mostly playing all day not having a care in the world beyond the day’s drama on the playground. I have this wish to be a kid again sometimes, but most of the time I don’t think this. That’s because I don’t think we really ever have to give up getting to act like a kid.

I still love coloring, swinging from monkey bars, and watching Disney movies (just watched Up!) Sometimes when I get together with a friend we will get out the coloring books or go to a playground. Sure I also have to study for exams and remember to pay rent but why should we have to choose between either fun or responsibility? I find I’m most relaxed when I make sure to make time for both. We can’t avoid our worries forever but it doesn’t hurt to laugh and play around for a few hours like a kid to give yourself a well-deserved break.

Having simple fun is a healthy part of life. Don’t forget to take a little time to act like a kid again. You’d be surprised how much less daunting responsibilities feel afterwards. Whenever I get very stressed I’m going to work hard to make sure I remember to do this and to get some laughter into my life.

What silly fun or adventure are you going to have today?

  1. I can’t think of anything worse than going back to childhood, probably because mine was awful, but you are right about acting like a kid! My Husband and I are always watching kids movies, we have a house full of “toys”, we are consistently being told we haven’t grown up by family and friends. I think it helps that we haven’t had children, the responsibility gene hasn’t been activated so while everyone else we know our ages now have 1-4 kids we are acting like them!

  2. I just got back into colouring myself! I also just rewatched Ponyo this weekend – great memories from my childhood with both of these things. Revisiting them definitely made me happy.

  3. You are still a kid! I know this post is 2 years old but you’re still a kid even now. That’s why you can “get out the coloring books” with your friends and they don’t look at you like you’re a nut. Childhood doesn’t end just because you start paying rent or whatever. It ends on some mysterious day where you wake up and realize you’ve become your mother and there’s nothing you can do about it. The thing is, this is the oldest you’ve ever been so you think it’s “old”, but it’s not. Enjoy this time, it’s the greatest time in your life.
