Why I Walk

Why do I walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention?

I walk because 1100 college students die by suicide every year. That’s 1100 too many. At my university alone, the average is two per year.

I walk for friends and loved ones who have struggled and are struggling with the monster that is depression.

I walk in memory of Claire Greaves, a blogger whom I followed for years and who unfortunately lost her battle to mental illness a few months ago.

And finally, I walk in honor of myself and my own past struggles. I walk because if it weren’t for my friend Amy answering the phone, my other friend Gen making me go to the hospital, and my access to adequate treatment I might not have seen my 23rd birthday.

I walk for all of them and for me and for you.
