May 1st marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month. Amidst all the wonderful blog posts, social media posts, and events for raising awareness, I wanted to send one simple message (and I really wanted to use this pun).
Please reach out for help if you are struggling.
“Mayday, mayday, mayday!” is a universal distress call signal. It’s used to signal a life-threatening emergency, for example, over the radio from a boat.
What most people don’t know though is that it comes from “m’aidez!” in French, which translates to “help me!”
So on this first day of May, if you are in pain, please send out a distress signal to someone you trust. And if they don’t respond, keep sending it out. Keep saying, “m’aidez!” Someone, somewhere will help.
Mental health distress can certainly be life threatening, and even if it isn’t your pain is valid and deserving of help.
The best way you can honor this awareness month is by taking care of yourself.
Morgan
Thank you, Morgan for bringing a far to often overlooked “illness(es) into the spotlight.
Most people are comfortable talking about Cancer, Alzheimer’s, MS, Lupus etc. Please don’t mistake what I’m saying, I’m not minimizing any of the above in any way, as I have lost someone I love to every single one of those diseases. My point being because of the stigma attatched to so many mental illnesses, they are a lot more likely to be swept under the rug than addressed and talked about. Great Post and thank you again for starting a conversation that truly needs to be addressed and spoken about.
